Ever since Taylor Swift‘s Shake It Off shook up the pop charts this summer, there have been thousands of covers.
But, as the singer herself points out (below), sometimes the best ones are the ones that change how you view the world. In this case, guitarist and vocalist Jesse Will flips the track into a completely harrowing tale.
The clip is led with a simple guitar line and accompanying violin and was filmed at St Dunstan and All Saint’s Church, Stepney. Adding the church as a backdrop, a new captivating layer is piled onto the typically cheery, tongue in cheek song.
As you can see, gone are the brassy horns, the rhythmic underpinning and the infectious pop hook. Instead, you are given a more emotional, jarring version. Will, as part of the Reload Sessions Youtube franchise, hails from New Zealand and travels all over the world. He’s expected to drop a brand new EP in March 2015.
